How to Use a WGU Pre-Assessment Effectively
A WGU pre-assessment is most useful as a diagnostic. Its value is not the score alone—it is the evidence it provides about which competencies deserve your remaining study time.
Prepare before taking it
Review the current course page and assessment guidance, then take the pre-assessment in a focused setting without outside help. If you look up answers, the result cannot reliably distinguish secure knowledge from gaps.
Read the coaching report by competency
Start with competency areas below target, but also mark answers you guessed correctly or solved too slowly. Group issues into missing knowledge, confusion between similar ideas, application difficulty, or testing habits.

Build a targeted repair plan
Match each weak competency to the relevant course resource. Review a small unit, close the material, retrieve the idea from memory, and apply it in a new example. Avoid restarting the entire course unless the report shows broad weakness.
Do not memorize the assessment
Remembered wording can create false confidence. Demonstrate readiness with new questions, explanations, diagrams, or scenarios that require the same competency in a different form. Your goal is transferable understanding.
Use official guidance for the final decision
Combine your coaching report with consistent performance on fresh practice and your ability to explain the course competencies. Consult your course instructor when evidence conflicts or one area remains unclear. Course policies and resources are authoritative and may change.
